A More Mindful Way Forward
Mindfulness is more than meditation. It is the practice of bringing our attention to the present moment — becoming more aware of what is happening within us and around us, without immediately judging it or reacting automatically.
So much of our lives can be spent dwelling on the past, worrying about the future or getting caught up in thoughts that leave us feeling overwhelmed. When this happens, we can lose touch with the moment we are actually living in. By learning to pause and pay attention to the present, we create space to see things more clearly, respond more thoughtfully and approach life's challenges with greater balance and perspective.
Mindfulness does not mean avoiding difficult thoughts or emotions, nor does it make life's problems disappear. Instead, it can help us change our relationship with them. Whether we are experiencing stress, anxiety, uncertainty, difficult emotions or the pressures of everyday life, developing greater awareness can help us recognise habitual patterns, reduce automatic reactions and make more conscious choices about how we respond.
My approach is based on Mindfulness Now, an adaptable programme developed by Nick Cooke that brings together key elements of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), alongside a wider range of mindfulness practices.
Through guided meditation, awareness of the breath and body, visualisation and reflective exercises, we gradually develop practical skills that can be integrated into everyday life. With regular practice, even ordinary moments, walking, eating, listening or simply taking a breath, can become opportunities to reconnect with ourselves and the present moment.
Practices and home exercises are adapted to individual needs, with an emphasis on choice, self-awareness and building a sustainable personal practice.
How Mindfulness May Support Your Wellbeing
Mindfulness-based approaches have been studied in relation to a range of mental and physical health conditions. They may help some people manage symptoms, cope with difficult experiences and develop greater awareness of their thoughts, emotions and bodily sensations. Evidence varies by condition, and mindfulness is not a substitute for appropriate medical care when needed.
Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing
Anxiety and Persistent Worry
Explore ways to recognise anxious thoughts, relate differently to persistent worries and gently bring your attention back to the present moment. Research into Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), developed by Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn, demonstrated improvements in stress, anxiety, pain and mood disturbance among participants.
Emotional Trauma and PTSD
Mindfulness-based approaches have also been investigated as a way of supporting people experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A meta-analysis of 19 randomised controlled trials involving 1,326 participants found significant reductions in PTSD symptoms among military veterans following mindfulness-based interventions. These findings suggest that mindfulness may offer additional support for some people experiencing trauma-related symptoms. However, practices should be carefully adapted to individual needs and circumstances.
Grief and Loss
Explore ways to make space for difficult emotions and meet the experience of loss with greater awareness and self-compassion.
Fears and PhobiasMindfulness can help people notice fear-related thoughts and physical sensations.
Behavioural Challenges and Habits
Addictions and Unhelpful Habits
Mindfulness-based approaches may help some people recognise cravings and triggers.
Eating Difficulties and Disordered Eating
Mindful awareness may support a more attentive relationship with eating. Eating disorders require anyway appropriate specialist assessment and care.
Weight Management and Emotional Eating
Mindfulness may help people recognise hunger, fullness and emotional triggers around eating.
Life Changes and Personal Direction
Managing Change and Uncertainty
Develop greater awareness of your reactions to change and explore ways to meet uncertainty with flexibility and perspective.
Feeling Stuck or Lacking Direction
Mindfulness can help you notice habitual patterns, clarify what matters to you and approach decisions with greater awareness.
Depression and Low Mood
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), developed by Professor Mark Williams, Professor Zindel Segal and Professor John Teasdale, has been shown to help reduce the risk of depressive relapse, particularly in people with a history of recurrent depression. Clinical trials have demonstrated that MBCT can significantly reduce the risk of relapse in this group. It is now recognised in clinical guidelines as an evidence-based approach to preventing recurrent depression.
